At Highgate we believe that in Physical Education pupils experience and gain knowledge and understanding of the role of exercise in good health. They develop a positive attitude to an active lifestyle and a concern for their physical well-being.

Our children are able to attend a breakfast club where they are provided with a healthy breakfast and an opportunity to participate in physical activities. In Year R the children begin the day with a 10 minute session of ‘yoga’. In KS1 staff use a variety of resources, including the ‘Wake up Shake up’ programme. These morning routines are intended to both improve the children’s fitness and enhance their readiness for learning.

This year curriculum P.E provision is being enhanced by input from a specialist teacher and coach. This forms an important part of our staff CPD. All children participate in 2 P.E sessions each week and include gymnastics, dance and ball skills throughout the year.

The Balanceability balance and biking program forms an integral part of our early years physical development provision with a high success rate of  children learning to cycle a 2 wheeled pedal bike by the end of their reception year. This also promotes awareness of road safety and a love of cycling.

Friday afternoon golden time is enhanced with swimming lessons and gardening at our school allotment. The children love to grow their own vegetables and use these to make delicious soups including tomato and pumpkin soup!

Physical development interventions for targeted groups of pupils include lego therapy, sensory circuits and forest school provision.

After-school clubs currently include lego, dance and ball skills which appeal to a great range of children throughout the school.

The children are also given opportunities to participate in local dance and sporting events with other schools throughout the year.
